Esoterically, the mother figure of Mary (derived from the Latin Mare, meaning "sea" or the "waters of life") represents the receptive, feminine principle of the human constitution. More specifically, she symbolizes the Lower Quaternary—the physical, etheric, astral, and lower mental bodies.
Before the Divine Spark can fully manifest, these lower material vehicles must be cleansed of worldly desires, animal passions, and selfish ego. The Soul must become Utterly Pure, Receptive, and "Virginal." It is only when the material nature is perfectly quieted and sanctified that it becomes a suitable, stable vessel for Divine Incarnation.
