God is ALL in All
This is a Philosophical and Spiritual endeavor to extract, Harmonize, and synthesize the Universal Truths underlying the world's Diverse Religious, Mystical, and Philosophical traditions. Most famously associated with the concept of Perennial Philosophy, it posits that All Major Traditions share a single, transcendent metaphysical Source and Core Set of Truths.
"By the Power of Truth, I, while Living, have Conquered the Universe."
"I Am Nothing, yet I Am Everything."
Adi Buddhai - the Primeval Wisdom
Attribution Note: The opening quote is attributed to Helena Petrovna Blavatsky (H.P.B.). The subsequent sections synthesize Esoteric teachings from Vajrayāna Buddhism, Theosophy (including Blavatsky's The Secret Doctrine), and Hermeticism (specifically concepts found in The Kybalion).
"Pick out and study only those explanations of the phenomena of life, which profane science is unable to give. By the end of a year or two, you will have learned more than all the Universities and Colleges can teach you. Sincere believers will be rewarded by seeing their Faith transformed into Knowledge. True Knowledge is of Spirit, and in Spirit alone, and cannot be acquired in any other way except through the region of the Higher Mind, the only plane from which we can penetrate the depths of the all-pervading Absoluteness. He who carries out only those laws established by human Minds, who lives that life which is prescribed by the code of mortals and their fallible legislation, chooses as his guiding star a beacon which shines on the ocean of Maya, (Temporary Delusions), and lasts but for one incarnation. These laws are necessary for the life and welfare of physical man alone. He has chosen a pilot who directs him through the shoals of one existence, a master who parts with him, however, on the threshold of death. How much happier that man who, while strictly performing on the temporary objective plane, the duties of daily life, carrying out each and every law of his country, and rendering, in short, to Caesar what is Caesar’s, leads in reality a Spiritual and permanent existence, at Life with no breaks of continuity, no gaps, no interludes, not even during those periods, which are the halting-places of the long pilgrimage of Purely Spiritual Life. All the phenomena of the lower human Mind disappear like the curtain of a proscenium, allowing him to live in the region beyond it, the plane of the noumenal, the ONE REALITY. If man by suppressing, if not destroying his selfishness and personality, only succeeds in KNOWING HIMSELF as he is behind the veil of physical Maya, he will soon stand beyond all pain, all misery, and beyond all the wear and tear of change, which is the chief originator of pain. Such a man will be physically of matter, he will move surrounded by matter, and yet he will live beyond and outside it. His body will be subject to change, but he himself will be entirely without it and will experience Everlasting Life even while in temporary bodies of short duration. All this may be achieved by the development of Unselfish Universal Love of Humanity, and the suppression of personality, or selfishness, which is the cause of all sin, and consequently of all human sorrow." - H.P. Blavatsky
Ādibuddha (or Adi-Buddha), often translated as the Primeval Wisdom or the Primordial Buddha, is a profound concept primarily found in Vajrayāna (Tantric) and some Mahāyāna traditions of Buddhism.
Ultimate Reality and Source of All Phenomena (Dharmakāya)
The Ādibuddha is often identified with the Dharmakāya (Truth Body) of all Buddhas. This is the Ultimate, Unconditioned Nature of Reality - Formless, Omnipresent, and beyond conceptual Thought.
It is the ground of All Being or the Ultimate Source from which all other Buddhas (like the Five Dhyāni Buddhas) and all phenomena emanate. It is not a "creator god" in the traditional monotheistic sense, but rather the underlying Truth and Potentiality.
Innate Wisdom (Buddha-jñāna)
The term "Ādi" can mean "primordial," suggesting a beginningless, Innate Wisdom that is present in all sentient beings - this is synonymous with Buddha-nature (Tathāgatagarbha).
It signifies the state of Being "awakened from the very beginning" (ādi-buddha), meaning that one's true nature is and always has been completely Pure and Enlightened, unconditioned by dualism or suffering (samsāra).
Symbolic Personification
In practice, the ultimate, inexpressible reality of the Ādibuddha is often personified for the purpose of meditation and ritual, making it comprehensible to practitioners. The most common personifications, depending on the tradition, are:
Vajradhara (The Vajra Holder): Often the main Ādibuddha in the Sarma (New Translation) schools of Tibetan Buddhism, representing the Ultimate Reality as the Union of Wisdom (Prajñā) and skillful means (Upāya), often depicted holding a vajra (thunderbolt, symbolizing Ultimate Reality or emptiness) and a bell (symbolizing Wisdom).
Samantabhadra (Universal Worthy): Often the main Ādibuddha in the Nyingma (Ancient) school, depicted as formless, dark blue/black to represent emptiness (śūnyatā) and the unconditioned nature of phenomena.
Vairocana (Great Illuminator): Sometimes considered the Ādibuddha, especially in East Asian Esoteric Buddhism (like Shingon), representing the Great Sun Buddha and the Perfect Realization of All Knowledge.
In essence, the esoteric meaning of Ādibuddha is the Realization that the Absolute, Enlightened nature of the Universe is Identical to one's own deepest, Unconditioned Consciousness. It is the ultimate goal of the Vajrayāna path: to realize this Primeval Wisdom as one's fundamental, ever-present state.
The Core Concept of Primeval Wisdom
In esoteric traditions, Primeval Wisdom is not a single book or a specific set of historical facts. Instead, it is the:
Original, Universal, and Undivided Knowledge of the Cosmos, the Divine, and humanity's place within the whole.
Divine Gnosis (Direct Knowledge) revealed to the first and greatest sages of humanity - often personified by figures like Hermes Trismegistus (Hermeticism) or the Rishis (Hinduism/Theosophy).
Eternal Truth that underlies all great world religions, philosophies, and Spiritual paths, reconciling them to a single, fundamental source.
It is considered the Source from which all subsequent, fragmented, or exoteric religious doctrines have flowed.
Manifestations in Esoteric Traditions
Theosophy - The Ageless Wisdom (Theosophia) - The term Theosophy literally means "Divine Wisdom" (Greek: Theos = God, Sophia = Wisdom).
Definition: Theosophy asserts that it is the modern expression of this Primeval Wisdom, which has been preserved and handed down through an unbroken line of Seekers, Masters, or the Ancient Brotherhood.
Key Tenets: This Wisdom is synthesized into three fundamental propositions, which include an Omnipresent, Eternal, Boundless, and Immutable Principle (the Absolute, the Monad) which is the Ultimate Reality. The Law of Periodicity (cyclic evolution) and Karma governing all of manifestation. The essential ONENESS of all Souls with the Universal Oversoul.
The Secret Doctrine: Helena Blavatsky's work is considered an attempt to reintroduce a portion of this hidden wisdom, describing a vast scheme of Cosmic and human evolution that has been "hidden" from general mankind due to its complexity and the potential for misuse.
Hermeticism - Prisca Theologia - In Hermeticism, associated with Hermes Trismegistus (a synthesis of the Greek Hermes and the Egyptian Thoth), this concept is often called the Ancient Theology (Prisca Theologia).
The Chain of Revelation: Renaissance thinkers popularized the idea that God gave a single, true theology to the earliest humans. This truth was preserved by an ancient chain of sages, with Hermes Trismegistus being one of the oldest, followed by figures like Zoroaster, Orpheus, Pythagoras, and finally Plato, demonstrating a continuous lineage of Primeval Wisdom.
The Kybalion & The Principles: The Hermetic Principles (like Mentalism, Correspondence, and Vibration) are viewed as Universal, timeless Laws derived from this Primeval Wisdom, necessary for an individual to understand and Master the Cosmos and themselves (the macrocosm and microcosm). Correspondence ("As above, so below") is the practical application of this Wisdom, showing that the principles governing the vast Universe (Macrocosm) are mirrored in the Soul of humanity (Microcosm).
Gnosis: The ultimate goal is Gnosis - a direct, intuitive, and Spiritual Knowledge of the Divine Mind (Nous), which leads to reunification with the Source, transcending the illusions of the material world.
Symbolic and Philosophical Implication
The esoteric significance of "Primeval Wisdom" is the insistence that Truth is Unitary and was established at the beginning of the cycle of existence:
The Divine Mind: It suggests that the entire Cosmos is Mental (Mentalism Principle) and originates in the Divine Mind. The Primeval Wisdom is simply the comprehensive understanding of this Divine Mind's blueprint and Laws.
The Fall as Descent: In many esoteric models (like some Theosophical/Gnostic views), the "Fall" or "Original Sin" is interpreted not as a moral failure, but as a necessary descent of pure Spirit/Consciousness (the Monad) into denser matter to gain experience, Self-Awareness, and eventually, a Conscious, perfected return to the Divine - a journey already mapped out by the Primeval Wisdom.
The Path of the individual: The path of the modern Spiritual seeker is seen as a remembering or re-awakening to this original Wisdom, which is eternally preserved within the deepest recesses of the human Soul (the Divine Spark).
This concept gives a grand, Unifying structure to all serious Spiritual endeavor, asserting that the deepest Mystical experiences across all cultures are simply different expressions of the same Timeless, Foundational Truth.
